COVID-19 cases - Weekly review: 20 - 26 June 2022

The number of people testing positive for COVID-19 has increased from 3,985 to 4,485 cases (+13%) for the week of 20 to 26 June 2022.

The number of PCR tests performed during the week of 20 to 26 June has decreased from 11,338 to 11,131.

44 people reported a positive rapid antigen test (RAT) for the reporting week, compared to 52 the previous week, bringing the number of positive results performed by a health-care worker to a total of 3,155. It should be noted that positive RATs are not included in the calculation of the positivity rate.

As of 26 June, the number of active infections has increased to 8,822 compared to 7,045 on 19 June, while the number of people healed increased from 248,548 to 251,249. The average age of those diagnosed as positive for COVID-19 is 38,4 years.

For the week of 20 to 26 June, 7 new deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported. The average age of the deceased is 72 years.

In the hospitals, there were 13 new admissions of confirmed COVID-19 patients in normal care, compared to 15 the previous week. In intensive care, the number of occupied beds remained stable at 2. The average age of hospitalised patients is 56 years.

Positivity rate and incidence rate

For the reference period, the effective reproduction rate (R) decreased, with 1.13% compared to 1.20% the previous week, while the positivity rate on all tests performed (prescriptions, contact tracing) increased from 35.15% to 40.29%.

The 7-day incidence rate increased to 695 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 617 per 100,000 inhabitants the previous week.

Re-infections as well as certified self-tests were included in the calculation of incidence rates. The incidence rate increased in all age groups.

The largest increase was recorded in the 15-29 age group (+22%), followed by the 30-44 age group (+18%). The lowest incidence rate is recorded in the 75+ age group (494 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), while the highest incidence rate is recorded in the 30-44 age group with 1,135 cases per 100.000 inhabitants.

Contaminations

With the number of cases increasing, it is difficult to call, review and determine the likely source of infection for all cases over the past week at the time of writing this report. Priority for calls is given to cases over 60 years of age and to residents of care homes.

Among the 5,925 resident cases registered in the week of 20 to 26 June 2022, 724 cases (12.2%) were called and the source was determined.

The family circle remains the most frequent source (25%), followed by leisure activities (12%), travel abroad (11%) and work (7%). The percentage of undetermined sources is 23%.

Wastewater monitoring in Luxembourg as part of SARS-CoV-2

According to the latest CORONASTEP report drawn up by the LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology), the contamination level of the 13 wastewater treatment plants analysed during the 25th week of 2022 still shows a high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater at national level. Both nationally and regionally, the trend is very similar to that of the previous week, with SARS-CoV-2 flows stabilising at a high level.
